What to Expect from Your Visit

Items to Bring

An eye exam can be a daunting experience for some patients. Things you can bring to your appointment to help us:

  • Your current pair of prescription glasses or preferred pair of reading glasses
  • Your current contact lens prescription (a picture of the contact lens box or contact wrapper is also ok)
  • Your current medication list with dosages
  • A copy of your previous eye exams, clinic notes, tests, or images (if applicable)

Visit Types

At Azar Eye Clinic your vision is our number one priority. We pledge to take the time required to properly evaluate and treat your problems. We offer many types of eye exam visits – which are often separated into different visit types:

  • Comprehensive exam (full exam), plan for 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Recheck without ophthalmic testing, plan for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Recheck with ophthalmic testing, plan for 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Glasses check (re-examination of glasses prescription), plan for 30 minutes
  • Contact lens fitting (initial fitting and education on inserting and removing contact lenses), plan for 1 hour
  • Contact lens re-evaluation (contact lens power adjustment), plan for 30 to 45 minutes
  • Eye treatment (problem focused exam based on new eye problem), plan for 30 to 45 minutes

Typical Exam Experience

Below you will find an example of what to expect from a typical comprehensive eye examination.

Prepare for a slightly longer appointment if you are a new patient, wear contact lenses, or have a history of serious eye problems. When you arrive at our office you will sign in with your name and appointment time at the front desk. After signing in, our friendly front office staff will verify your personal information and insurance. Next, an ophthalmic technician will call you into our examination and testing area. The technician will collect your history, ask about your medical conditions, ask about your current eye drops and medications, perform a vision screening, perform a refraction (glasses check), and check intra-ocular pressure (we do NOT use the “air puff”).

If you have ophthalmic testing ordered by your eye physician then it will be performed at this point. Most comprehensive exams include a refraction (glasses check) and dilation. Dilation involves the use of special eye drops which enlarge the pupil allowing for a much better view of the inside of the eye. Dilation lasts for approximately 4 hours during which time your pupil will remain enlarged, you may be more sensitive to bright light, and your vision (especially up close) may be blurry. We do offer retina photos in place of dilation for most patients (ask your technician for more details). It takes approximately 30 minutes for the dilation drops to take effect. While you are waiting for your eyes to dilate your will be placed in our comfortable dilation room.

After your dilation is complete your eye physician will call you into an examination room. Your eye physician will review the information collected, review any testing, and review your initial eye screening and refraction. Your eye physician may ask additional question or ask for clarifications regarding any problems you are having. Your eye physician may repeat some or all of the vision test(s) and/or refraction. Finally your eye physician will use specialized equipment to carefully examine the front, middle, and back of your eye in detail. This examination of the eyes requires multiple bright lights, which may be slightly uncomfortable for some patients. Simply do your best to relax and open your eyes to the best of your ability.

After your examination is complete your eye physician will discuss any findings, and/or treatment options with you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and we can also provide written educational materials or copies of your medical records. Once your examination is complete you will be brought to the check out area where you will check out, schedule a follow-up appointment, and receive any printed materials (such as a copy of your glasses prescription or educational materials). We will provide darkly tinted shades free of charge for all our dilated patients.
